Learning Spaces

Funding from HEFCE's Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) scheme in 2005 coincided with a movement towards re-thinking about learning spaces and social spaces within universities. In 2006 JISC released a Designing Spaces for Effective Learning publication http://www.jisc.ac.uk/eli_learningspaces.html which provides some background and some examples in order 'to promote better understanding of what makes an effective design for the 21st century'. The LearnHigher partners each received an amount of capital in order to develop what became known as LearnHigher spaces in their institutions. The spaces were designed to meet local needs but primarily to support the learning topic areas of the partners. This section is currently under development but will provide a flavour of how the learning spaces were developed, their uses, purposes and benefits, and what we have learned about how the spaces are used to enhance student and/or staff experience.
