Introduction

Nottingham Trent University is responsible for the Academic Writing Learning Area, although we also work collaboratively with colleagues in other academic writing areas such as, Report Writing, Referencing & Plagiarism etc, where there are issues that cross boundaries. 

The pages look at essay writing from a number of levels

1. Fundamentals of effective writing – grammar, sentence construction etc
2. Features that make an essay unique from other forms of writing
3. Developing an academic argument through the essay
4. Providing information about the discourse of academic writing, e.g. writing in the disciplines
5. We also work closely with colleagues over issues such as integrating research into essays

Resources for students include downloadable podcasts with advice on writing for exams, and a recommended reading section with links to some great study guides. There are also weblinks to interactive activites and tips on essay planning, essay writing, paragraph, sentences, and punctuation.  

Resources for staff, include workshop and activities packs that staff can use in their sessions and a recommended reading section with great advice for tutors. There are also weblinks to excellent online activities and resources  that can be given to students or integrated into a seminar.
