IntroductionWe are approaching this learning area in the knowledge that there are a number of key stakeholders including: foundation students, undergraduate students, post graduate students, academic teaching staff, librarians and learning support advisers. According to CILIP (The Chartered Institute of Information Professionals) guidelines, Information Literacy is defined as 'knowing when and why you need information, where to find it, and how to evaluate, use and communicate it in an ethical manner.’ This can be found at http://www.cilip.org.uk. We will be following the standard UK Information Literacy model, devised by the Informaion Literacy Working Group of the Society of College, National & University Libraries (SCONUL). Details are available from the SCONUL Website:http://www.sconul.ac.uk/groups/information_literacy/ Mission Statement
Our intention is to present research findings and to provide generic and re-useable learning objects of an interactive nature. The materials will be available to both staff and students. Staff will be able use them in a subject independent way, then they will be able to customise them, if they wish to do so. The objects will include WebCT items, interactive websites and videos. We will also include links to relevant Internet sites and research in Information Literacy. Learning ObjectsWe have identified five learning objects to test and develop so far: - The Internet Detective (WebCT) - In co-operation with University of Bristol
- Info Skills (WebCT) – in co-operation with MMU Libraries
- Information Literacy for HE Students (Interactive Website) – Tallinn University
- The Citing Proficiency Tutorial (WebCT) – MMU Information & Communications Dept.
- Avoiding Plagiarism Tutorial (WebCT) – MMU Philosophy Dept.
