Introduction

The Maths, Numeracy & Statistics Area mainly offers support to students who are struggling with the mathematical and statistical components of their degree programme. Whilst this includes degrees, such as engineering, where mathematical content is expected, it is also aimed at social science subjects like psychology, business & management etc, where students may be shocked to discover they need to get to grips with far more maths than they can recall from their (rather distant) GCSE studies.                                       

We aim to identify and disseminate good practice in supporting students’ mathematical needs and to evaluate and enhance the effectiveness of our resources and the support we provide.

Additional to the overall aims of LearnHigher, some of the objectives for this learning area are:

  • to develop new material/resources for Numeracy, Mathematics and Statistics to fill in any gaps in existing material;
  • to explore models of providing formative feedback;
  • to investigate what staff and students from a range of disciplines see as being the issues in teaching/learning mathematics at undergraduate level.
