, Learning & Teaching Development Unit, Brunel University IntroductionThis Learning Area covers: - preparing and delivering presentations, including an indepth look at best practices in using Microsoft PowerPoint;
- contributing in seminars;
- intercultural communication;
- effective communication and negotiation (i.e. within working teams/groups);
- making learning and assessment of oral communication skills inclusive of all students (including second language speakers and disabled students)
Resources include downloadable advice for students on developing necessary skills, experience and confidence in communicating their ideas effectively and fairly. Guidance is also provided for teachers on facilitating these learning opportunities. To ensure interactivity, information is provided in a variety of formats including annotated video footage, PowerPoint presentations and self‑review tools. We have begun to develop existing approaches and paper‑based and online materials and to experiment with the use of video footage for self‑review. and the creation of video‑based examples/vignettes for use in work‑shops and online. In terms of research, the process of providing opportunities for students to develop their oral communication skills will be combined with the documenting of students' reflections on their progress during this process and beyond. This should provide some rich and insightful qualitative data. We have worked closely with the Listening and Group work Learning Areas.
