Getting yourself informed: what you need to know and how to find it
Independent study means working out what you need to know and where you will find it
This activity aims to progress students toward more independent learning by encouraging them to consider what they need to know and how to find it. This might include essential information like deadlines, assignment titles, examination timetables and location of teaching rooms. It could also include information about how things work differently at university, such as guidelines for referencing styles, what to do if they are absent through illness, or how to renew a library book. In addition they might think about how to access support providers: how to book an individual session with a study adviser, or get advice about accommodation. Some essential examples are provided on the worksheet to get students started. You might let the group decide on their own necessary information, or provide them with more suggestions, or ask them to share suggestions with the whole group.
As they complete the worksheet, it becomes a personalised ‘quick reference’ tool for the times when they need the information.
The handout for this activity is available in Word format, so you can adapt it to meet your needs.
